Our commitment to Aboriginal Students. YBC Aboriginal Community Agreement.

2012 ACA Signing Ceremony

The college is extremely pleased to have reached the tenth anniversary milestone of its Aboriginal Community Agreement.

This important initiative has been maintained and continually revised with through collaboration with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal consultants as well as Aboriginal community representatives.  This agreement was originally signed in 2001 by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students, staff, community members. It was developed in a spirit of mutual respect requiring all stakeholders to work together to improve educational outcomes for Aboriginal students according to collaboratively developed principles.

Sustainability has been achieved by a process of review and re-signing.

The agreement is viewed by the local community, school and wider community as groundbreaking due to the longevity of the agreement, sustained focus on positive outcomes for our young Aboriginal people and the enthusiasm with which it is still embraced by all concerned.  This agreement has transcended the vision of the original principal and has outlived five substantive and acting principals.

The absolute importance of the work that is being done to improve the long term outcomes for our Aboriginal students is part of everything that we do and the ethos and belief that by working together we can make a difference.

We are not aware of any other long standing simimlar agreement Australia wide and this is one of the main reasons YBC was awarded a national Dare to Lead High Achievement Award for excellence in leadership in Indigenous Education in 2012 and was invited to present at the national Dare to Lead conference in Canberra in May of that year.

Working collaboratively to improve educational outcomes for Aboriginal students. Yule Brook College and the Aboriginal Community, Parents and Students believe the basis of this agreement is founded on the following understandings :

Reconciliation and Cooperation is the basis of college and community interaction and the education of our students

Aboriginal culture is unique and is important to Yule Brook College’s indigenous people and the identity of the college

Education is the key to the future for the Aboriginal students of Yule Brook College

Successful education of Aboriginal students is a result of a strong and positive relationship between the college, parents and the Aboriginal community

Parents and the Aboriginal Community play a key role in the education of their children and commit to work in a spirit of cooperation and harmony with the college to advance their children’s learning

ALL Aboriginal students graduate at the end of Year 10 - ALL Aboriginal students will be encouraged to complete Year 12

YBC is a “no shame” college . YBC creates a learning environment that nurtures and encourages students to take pride in self, family, and take their place in the wider community.
