International visitors graced Yule Brook College with their presence this month, searching for ideas on how to keep children in school. The Peru education department representatives were taken on a tour of the school and introduced to several students involved in program that made school more appealing. Education and vocation training general director Manual Solis explained his background to the students. “We are here to study the education system and we are looking at how to prepare teachers and how to select teachers” he said. “There are 28 million people in Peru so we have very big schools.” Mr Solis, initial education coordinator Olinda Moloche and continuous teacher education expert Elizabeth Guibert met with three Year 10 students who have been kept busy with their Aboriginal art. They will be paid $1000 to complete their work. Principal Greg Lowry explained to his visitors that student attendance used to be low, but the school had seen a turn around with the projects and programs on offer. “The Yule Brook College Football Academy works closely with the teachers at the school to help encourage students attend school” he said. “We have about 80 to 90 percent of our parents attend parent/teacher nights. They enjoy it because the teachers serve the parents refreshments.” He said the school liked to keep classes to a minimum with about 17 students so that teachers could focus on the disadvantaged students.” |

Maddington middle school Yule Brook College was recognised by the Australian Association for Pastoral Care for its specialised teaching methods on Monday, receiving the Norm Hyde Award for excellence in pastoral care in education.
A small school of less than 200, Yule Brook took out the award at the presentation at The Esplanade Hotel Fremantle over both public and private schools.
Principal Paul Billing accepted the award on the school’s behalf, and said it was a great honour and testament to the progress Yule Brook College is making.
“The award recognises a totally integrated approach where pastoral care is a part of our everyday teaching and learning program,” he said.

On Friday 31st October, Yule Brook College had their first athletics carnival since as long as anyone at the school can remember! It took place at Langford Athletics Complex and included all year 8’s and 9’s as well as some year 10 helpers. Each advisory group in year 8 and 9 were assigned a colour for the day: Mr Hill was green, Mr Marks was red, Mrs Reeves was white, Miss Bennett was yellow and Mr Bottomley was blue.

Last term, my advisory topic was Veterinary Medicine. I started out with a mind map about veterinary medicine in general. I then narrowed it down to “what a veterinarian does”. Afterwards, I then chose the thesis statement “Veterinary services and pet care is a major industry in Australia”. I then completed my quantitative task, wherein I proved my thesis statement correct.

There is some interesting work going on in advisory time. Examples of this are: Reg and Isaac have teamed up to make a model of a skate park that they can use “tech decks” on. Abbas has discovered a great computer programme named “Sketch Up” to design a soccer stadium in 3D. The programme is sophisticated, but Abbas has taken on the challenge and is producing a professional looking design.

One of the most exciting events this week has been the cooking group’s visit to Bentley Tafe. The group got to look around the Bakery, Butchery and Vet clinic where there were snakes. Mrs Reeves fled from the room for that part of the visit, but showed remarkable bravery when it came to lunch at the Bentley Pines restaurant run by Tafe students. She had ox tongue for entree` and ostrich for lunch as a way of encouraging our students to be adventurous. A few took up her challenge, but probably regretted it. The group also got to visit the fashion students and look at fabrics and sewing techniques.

Ms Katrina Narkle – Exhibition
Katrina presented the first section of her exhibition on the netball court of East Maddington Primary School. Watching her prove that “a fourteen year old girl is able to successfully coach young aspiring netballers” were Mr Billing, Mr Hogan (member of Big Picture Australia board), Mr Taylor, Debbie (the coach), various parents, Sam, Ben, Jeremy (from Katrina’s Advisory) and her teacher Mr Belotti.
Katrina took the eleven nine and ten year olds through a brief warm-up followed by a skills section, drills and finally a game. She gave clear instructions to the girls and used her whistle appropriately.

We currently have approximately 60% of our year group participating in our Internship program. This requires students to work in the adult world in order to understand more about their classroom learning. This issue of the TGIF features two Star Performers – Sineath Nath and Mashita Mohammad Effendi. Sineath and Mashita are demonstrating to their classmates that they can mix it with older students by attending different universities in Perth as a part of their learning plans.
