Yule Brook College Wins Another Award

Maddington middle school Yule Brook College was recognised by the Australian Association for Pastoral Care for its specialised teaching methods on Monday, receiving the Norm Hyde Award for excellence in pastoral care in education.

A small school of less than 200, Yule Brook took out the award at the presentation at The Esplanade Hotel Fremantle over both public and private schools.

Principal Paul Billing accepted the award on the school’s behalf, and said it was a great honour and testament to the progress Yule Brook College is making.

“The award recognises a totally integrated approach where pastoral care is a part of our everyday teaching and learning program,” he said.

The award was a result of the college’s personalised approach to teaching that has been developed over the last few years, a feature of which is an Advisory class, incorporating students’ interests and passions into their learning.

The Advisory classes also ensure students receive ample support and attention in their studies from parents and teachers.

“An important part of the school’s success is strong partnerships between parents and teachers,” said Mr Billing.

“Successful pastoral care is something that can happen only if it’s lived and delivered by all staff.”

In addition to the Advisory classes, year nine and ten students undertake internships with community based mentors, who assist them with their projects relating to their chosen fields, which can range from forensic science to teaching.

The approach is supported by not-for-profit organisation Big Picture Education, who assists teachers and students in public schools Australia wide.

Mr Billing said Yule Brook College’s student-focused approach to teaching, together with restorative approaches to conflict resolution has seen the school enjoying improved attendance rates, fewer suspensions and a more nurturing learning environment.

“There’s strong community support for what we’re doing and we’re determined to keep working this way into the future.”
